A couple of years ago, I attended a Disney/Marvel promotional event in which some of their reps discussed future projects. Amongst the obvious additions to the Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor franchises, as well as showing us the first wire-frame animation shots of a certain now-hugely-successful Frozen, they managed to slip in some concept art for a little film called Guardians of the Galaxy.
We all looked upon this strange image of a gun-toting raccoon, and giant walking tree, a muscular henchman, a green-skinned woman, and a man in a bizarre mask, and all pretty much had the same reaction; ‘what IS this?’. The comic may have been around since the 1960s, but even the geekiest amongst us had trouble recollecting this one. There was no way, in our minds, that Disney could replicate the success they had with the Avengers series with this. They were scraping the bottle of the barrel.
Fast forward two years, and now the internet is on fire with talk of the Guardians. With the recent release of the trailer, this previously unknown tale of a ragtag bunch of space vigilantes has been shot straight to the forefront of every self-respecting film fan’s mind – and there seems to be a universal confidence that this will, in fact, be a huge success. The trailer looks cool, the characters endearing, the action spectacular. It’s a complete turnaround.
Regardless, in a year that has already seen The LEGO Movie destroy the box office, with big-hitters like The Hunger Games and The Hobbit still to come, its brave to argue that Guardians of the Galaxy can topple them all…but I’m going to do it anyway, because I have faith that Marvel have pulled a massive space rabbit out of the hat with this one.
So without further ado, here are ten reasons Peter Quill and co. will be taking money out of all of our pockets this summer.
When I'm not watching films, going to University to learn about films, making films, or running a cinema, I like to change things up a bit by writing about films. So here I am. Follow me @retail_monkey
