With Dallas Buyers Club (review here) already having wowed critics, and set to wow the general public with its theatrical release today, much attention has turned to the quality of co-star Jared Leto’s performance as an HIV-positive transgender woman, for which he is nominated for an Academy Award.
The concept of an actor or actress switching sexes in their performance is nothing new, and with gender and sexuality such a prevalent issue in Hollywood, much scrutiny is directed towards such roles when they crop up. Leto’s performance is obviously one of class and integrity, but not all gender-bending parts carry the same mark of quality. The following ten actors – five good, five bad – are testament to that.
So sit back in your baggy flannel shirt and jeans, or tight pink night dress (whatever takes your fancy), and enjoy The London Film Review’s run-down of the best and worst cross-gender performances.
