NBC’s first season of “Hannibal” (Season 2 trailer here) starring everyone’s favourite doctor/cannibal Hannibal Lecter was both a critical and ratings success, with viewers tuning in to see the mind games being played by Mads Mikkelsen’s version of Thomas Harris’ enduring creation.
Season One ended on a huge twist that…ah, spoilers. If you haven’t caught up with Hannibal yet, here are 5 reasons why you definitely should before Season 2 starts to air.
1. The Writing
Bryan Fuller, writer of wonderfully surreal and tragically cancelled show Pushing Daisies, is as brilliant as ever. The script is full of dark humour and there is definitely no shortage of cannibalism puns. The show, acting as a prequel to the sorts of Hannibal stories to which we are accustomed, allows us to get to know Dr. Lecter’s character a little better. That doesn’t mean we understand him though, and he’s certainly still a cannibalistic killer, but in this show he seems a little more emotionally engaged than any previous interpretations. This facilitates the further development of an already complex plot, and often causes the viewer to begin to compromise what they would initially accept as tolerable or “normal.”
